Nazare Nazaré beach, with its mild climate and natural beauty, has one of the most ancient traditions connected to fishing in Portugal. The long sandy half-moon shaped beach, which is also the town’s sea front, is known for its grandeur and for the brightly-coloured awnings that decorate the white sandy beaches, contrasting with the blue of the water. This is the beach in Portugal that retains the more colourful fishing traditions, it’s not uncommon to encounter fishmongers who still wear the traditional seven skirts. Facing the sea on the right, you will see an impressive headland: This is Sítio, which provides one of the most famous views of the Portuguese coast. It is a 318 metre rock face with a sheer drop to the sea. At the top you'll find a Holy Site and place of legends and miracles. These days, Nazaré’s major attractions are the waves and surfing. Take a casual stroll through the narrow streets and have lunch in one of the local restaurants to enjoy a plate of fresh seafood!

Forte de Sao Miguel The construction of this Mannerist-style monument began during the reign of D. Sebastião, in 1577, with the aim of defending the cove from attacks by Algerian, Moroccan, Dutch and Norman pirates who attacked the Atlantic coast. The Fort survived the French Invasions, where enemy soldiers who fought against the population of Sítio and Pederneira took refuge. The invaders were only expelled from our country in 1811, making this monument a landmark of the popular revolt and the autonomy of the Nazarenes. At the beginning of the 20th century, with no longer a military role, the fishermen made the government feel the need to install a lighthouse and a house for the keeper there, to support fishing activity. With a privileged location next to the Nazaré promontory, it is currently considered the main observation post for the giant waves at Praia do Norte, which have made Nazaré a world surfing reference. The Fort is currently home to the Nazaré Canyon Interpretive Center. Price: 2€
